Jessica Rotter is able to transcend creative boundaries and defy what’s expected of a modern female musician. The songstress’ voice has been heard across multiple genres, from movies, TV shows and commercials to backing vocals and collaborations with other artists—all in addition to her original songs. The list of artists she has worked with reads like a who’s who of the music industry today: Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and others.

Rotter’s family roots are steeped in music, with her grandfather writing songs for Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. With this background, Rotter describes herself as a “musical storyteller” with classical training from Pepperdine University in opera, musical theatre, and directing for theatre and film. She is just as comfortable using her voice in a major feature film (credits include Pitch Perfect 1 & 2 and Frozen) as she is performing one of her original songs live.

Following the success of charting #1 on HypeMachine with her mashup of Stay/Animal with Emily Colombier, Rotter is embarking on her most powerful and ambitious project to date; the full length release of Plains. Produced by Cazz Brindis and mixed by Scott M. Smith (Carole King, John Mayer, Katy Perry), the 11 track record is breathtakingly stunning and cinematic. Most uniquely, Plains is organically raw with the listener being able to hear breath in every track, a rarity in today’s over produced musical landscape.

In the album’s leading single “Pray for Rain”, Rotter poignantly describes wrestling with falling in love in “uncertain times, lost times and times of revelation.” On the track “Stars”, you can clearly hear Rotter’s past of free spirited travels and musical influences of early 60s folk and Americana. “Let Me Go” is a well-crafted, catchy and emotional pop tune expressing the restless moments found in relationships.

Plains will be released April 22nd nationwide.

B&10 - NEW SINGLE: JESSICA ROTTER – “PRAY FOR RAIN”

A lovely discovery tonight comes in the form of the impressively talented and multi-faceted Jessica Rotter, a burgeoning songstress from Los Angeles who is proudly creating “cinematic folk” under the broader canopy of indie pop with a powerful voice that’s already surprisingly well-traveled.

After classical training in opera, musical theatre, and directing for theatre and film at Pepperdine University, she’s earned vocal credits in feature films like Pitch Perfect 1 & 2, Frozen, and Big Hero 6, worked with legendary artists such as Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, and Quincy Jones, and has reached #1 on the popular fan-powered trending chart site HypeMachine with her 2014 “Stay/Animal” mashup with Emily Colombier.

Now, she’s hard at work on a full-length effort called Plains, an eleven track project with a killer new single she’s just released that I’m psyched to share with you tonight.

“Pray For Rain” is a delectable medley of pitter-pattering bongos, weeping strings, twisting shakers, finger snaps, hand claps, and a host of other carefully selected accents on crystalline vocals that confidently steer the track through “uncertain times, lost times, and times of revelation”. Everyone has their own take on falling in love, but hers is as refreshing as they come. Check it out:

Just Released: Jessica Rotter Pray for Rain

Jessica Rotter is certainly an accomplished singer and performer. She has worked with a who’s who in the music industry: Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and others.

We were just sent a single to her upcoming album. I was hesitant to review it because it was billed as a pop track and her last single charted at #1 on HypeMachine. This is usually too much hype for the artists I’m interested in.

But then I listened to it anyway, and I’m glad I did.

“Pray For Rain” is an elegantly produced track with very simple arrangement that focusses the listener on Jessica’s gorgeous vocals and harmonies. The lyrics are well-crafted, her singing is amazing … the whole song is simply excellent.

Her PR material says that she “is able to transcend creative boundaries and defy what’s expected of a modern female musician.” When I first read that I was like, “yeah, but that’s what everyone says.”

It’s true for Jessica. If “Pray For Rain” is any indication, then her upcoming album Plains will be well-worth the listen.

Plains releases April 22nd.

Featured Artist of the Week: Jessica Rotter

This week, we’re thrilled to featured Wurrly Ambassador, Jessica Rotter. This singer/songwriter is a self-proclaimed ice cream lover and her favorite band is Arcade Fire. Jessica comes from a very musical family - years ago, her grandfather wrote songs for Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin! She has been involved in music and singing in a variety of industries, from movies to TV commercials to her local church as a child. Jessica now writes and releases her own music. In the future, she plans to live in London and direct a play at the National Theater (save us some tickets please). Be sure to follow Jessica on her social pages, check out her site, and of course her Wurrlies (@JessicaRotter). Read more below:

What does music mean to you, how does it fit into your life?

Music is an incredible universal language. We all connect with it in a unique way but everyone speaks it and everyone understands it. I grew up in a very musical family - my mom is a flute player, my dad is a composer, my grandpa played many instruments and wrote music for greats like Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin. When I was four, I sang a solo at church and was swooped into the world of session singing. I’ve had the amazing honor of singing for movies, tv shows, commercials and albums since I was that young! It took some growing pains to transition from a job where I sing for other people to owning and understanding my own voice with the songs that I write. I am so glad to finally be recording and releasing my own music. I love being able to see how it effects the listener/audience. I am so moved by music and it’s been amazing watching my music and my voice move other people.

Dream destination?

I really want to go to Greece & Sweden next. I really want to live in London forever.

Who is your all time favorite band or artist?

That’s not a fair question. I love Arcade Fire and I realized that sometimes my “favorite band” depends on how deeply their albums hit me at the time. Arcade Fire tend to release new albums right as I’m in huge transitional times of my life - so they have become the soundtrack of my heartstrings. I also really love Jim James. He’s electric. I like people who sing from their souls and don’t put anything on.

Favorite dessert?

Ice Cream. Or anything baked with berries (with a side of ice cream.)

One random fact about yourself?

In college, I majored in Directing and I won’t feel like I’ve fully succeeded in life until I’ve directed a play at the National Theatre in London.

The Next To Shine

Jessica Rotter, working her way from the background to the spotlight

There are those who sing – and those who mashup. Jessica Rotter is an artist that does both very well. She seems to have appeared from nowhere… but is clearly going somewhere. The LA-based singer/songwriter has found herself gaining a strong fan base on Soundcloud and YouTube and has recently added the accolade of #1 record on Hypemachine.

She has teamed up with fellow singer/songwriter Emily Colombier, gaining over 100,000 plays on her SoundCloud page alone from her mashup cover of Rihanna/Mikky Ekko’s “Stay” and Miike Snow’s “Animal.  Her formidable vocals and piano-driven records stand out on tracks like “Cold Water” (Damien Rice Cover) and she is drawing comparisons to proven legends such as Adele and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum.

Not only has she worked with the 2014 Grammy winners for “Album of the Year” but she has also worked with Adam Lambert and Phil Collins among others. Her background singing career has allowed her to sing for Alicia Keys, Carole King, and Quincy Jones at a Carole King benefit concert, and her voice also appears on movies such as Disney’s Frozen and Despicable Me 2. Her proven track record in this industry shows a strong a career and she has no plans of slowing down it seems.

by Graham Porter on Jan 28, 2014 • 8:44 pmNo Comments

Now this is a damn fine mashup and cover for your Monday.  Very cleverly done indeed with Rihanna’s ‘Stay’ and Miiiiiiiiike Snow’s ‘Animal’ mixed up so delicately.

Fill your heart with this.

Jessica Rotter & Emily Colombier – “Stay/Animal” (Miike Snow x Rihanna Mashup/Cover)

Jessica Rotter and Emily Colombier take their new mash-up one step further by actually covering the source material instead of just bringing the songs together via a splicing program. Jessica Rotter covers Miike Snow’s “Animal” and Emily Colombier covers Rihanna‘s “Stay”. Paired together, both songs fit like a previously unsolved puzzle, now complete and not to be taken apart ever again. Listen to it below.

Stay/Animal Mashup-Jessica Rotter and Emily Colombier

Today, I stumbled across this new mashup by Jessica Rotter and Emily Colombier that brilliantly mashed up "Stay" by Rihanna, one of my favorite songs from 2013, and "Animal" by Miike Snow. This is by far one of the best mashups I have ever heard. The piano that resonates throughout the piece is very true to the feel of both songs and both women's voices, while not quite those of Rihanna, are still very innocent and pure. This song is beyond perfectly mashed up, it feels like these two songs could just be one big song by either Rihanna or Miike Snow, that's how good this track is. I am embedding the SoundCloud player below so you guys can listen to it and download it for free for a limited time. Enjoy!

Mashup Monday | Week 144

By Lydia Published January 27, 2014

I got called out last week on Twitter for not posting enough Mashup Mondays. I feared it would come to that. So I’m getting my ass in shape and posting a Mashup Monday. (No promises on next week – good mashups are too hard to come by. That might also be an excuse for it being hard to find time to post on Mondays. The real world is the worst.)

Indie Shuffle

Taking Rihanna's "Stay" and blending it with Miike Snow's "Animal," Rotter has created a beautifully absorbing tune that you'll have on repeat. It really is amazing how well the two songs gel together, and Rotter's strong vocals only help emphasis the tenderness of the lyrics.

Mash Up: Rihanna vs Miike Snow “Stay/Animal (Jessica Rotter Cover)”

Posted by: ithinkyoulllikethissong on 25 January 2014

Didn’t realise how well these songs go together but now I hear it, I can’t believe I didn’t hear it before. Jessica Rotter has put together Rihanna’s moving “Stay” with Miike Snow’s upbeat “Animal” and it works perfectly. (It doesn’t hurt that Jessica and her friend Emily Colombier’s voices are amazing together too).

My jaw just dropped at 3.26…
